Tianjin University ก่อตั้งในปี ค.ศ. 1895 โดยเป็นสถาบันการศึกษาระดับสูงแห่งแรกๆ ในประวัติศาสตร์การศึกษาจีนยุคใหม่ และเป็นหนึ่งในมหาวิทยาลัยหลักภายใต้การควบคุมดูแลของกระทรวงศึกษาธิการจีน มหาวิทยาลัยเปิดรับนักศึกษาต่างชาติเมื่อปี ค.ศ. 1954 จนถึงปัจจุบันมีนักเรียนต่างชาติเข้าทำการศึกษามากกว่า 4,000 คน ในสาขาวิชาต่างๆ จากกว่า 70 ประเทศทั่วโลก ได้รับการยอมรับ และพัฒนาให้มีความเป็นมาตรฐาน ทั้งในระดับประเทศ และต่างประเทศ รวมทั้งได้รับความร่วมมือในด้านต่างๆจากองค์กรและจากมหาวิทยาลัยทั่วโลก นอกจากนี้ทางมหาวิทยาลัยยังมีความพร้อมทั้งในด้านสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกต่างๆ เช่น หอพักสำหรับนักศึกษาต่างชาติ ซึ่งสามารถรองรับได้ถึงกว่า 400 คน
